Tasting Notes

“Glen Moray on steroids… beautiful juicy colour, honeysuckle, orchard fruits – more pear than apples. Noticeable honey’d floral notes, with a more waxy honey coming through after time in the glass. Mix of vanilla, honey, lemon and sherbert fizz on the palette. Balanced oak. Dried apple with a confectionary sweetness to it.”

In the summer of 1988, after graduating from Kenyon College, I embarked on a backpack adventure through the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Europe and various Communist Block Countries. I discovered a personal need to better understand my heritage and experience the places of my family origins. In Italy, my wife and I created a company ten years ago, Nonnie Importers, LLC that imports extra virgin olive oil from my grandfather’s village in Umbria. We return every year to pick, press and bottle the most delicious oil then air freight it to the US and deliver two tons to family, friends and customers in 35 states just weeks off the tree in time for enjoyment and gifting during the Holiday season. The oil can be purchased at BonacciOil.com.

While trekking through Scotland that fateful summer, where Mom's family claims some of its heritage, I fell in love with the people and their customs including golf, whiskey and fly fishing. I purchased a bottle of Glen Moray 20 year old Scotch Whiskey which made its way unbroken through the many countries I visited that summer of 1988. It remained unopened until my return home when I would drink drams on only very special occasions. It took 20 years to finish the bottle but it left me with memories and dreams to last a lifetime. After my adventure abroad I enrolled in The School of Dental and Oral Surgery at Columbia University where upon graduation, I matched to Columbia Presbyterian’s Oral Surgery Residency program. I completed Medical School at The College of Physicians and Surgeons in two years, then completed a General Surgery Internship at Columbia and finally earned a certificate in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery also at Columbia. I discovered that I appreciate specialization, tradition, and the finer things life has to offer during this incredible time working side by side with the most talented doctors on planet earth.

My wife and I were married six years earlier but ten years in New York City in the prime of our lives was enough and we moved south to Virginia, opening the next chapter in our lives. In June of 1998, friends threw a going away party for us on Manhattan's Upper West Side and between glowing toasts, stories, and shared memories, presented me with a pewter flask engraved with “The Good Doctor”. Little did I know what would become of that simple phrase decades later.

I’m a dreamer where nothing is impossible and the only limitations are those that are self-imposed. So imagine my surprise when I found a barrel of 11 year old, Glen Moray Scotch Whiskey for sale at an auction in Mayfair, London!  Glen Moray was purchased by Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy when it acquired Glenmorangie Distillery in 2004.  In 2008 Glen Moray was sold to La Martiniquaise, a French conglomerate, and as a result of that sale, various barrels became available at auction.  My whiskey cask sat undisturbed for another 5 years in the Elgin distillery.

Every scotch has a story... this whiskey was born with water from the River Lossie, a slow moving river in the northeast of Scotland with headwaters originating in the hills above Dallas at 400 meters above sea level and emptying into the Moray Firth at Lossiemouth, was distilled at Glen Moray on December 06, 2007, bottled in Edinburgh, labeled in London and then exported to the US under the trademark name, "The Good Doctor."  The river is banked by lush grasses with little leaf and organic matter giving it a unique sweetness and fruitiness that characterizes whiskey from this region of Speyside.

This is a very rare opportunity to own single barrel at cask strength Speyside Scotch Whiskey. It’s a product that is rarely bottled and made available in the US market. It honors my Scottish heritage from the Clan Ross outside of Glasgow and one of Scotland's greatest customs... whiskey drinking. There are only 229 numbered bottles in this independent bottling brought to you by Nonnie Importers, LLC.  When it's gone... it's gone!
